In Math, we are currently working on Topic 4-Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers.  We are learning to add and subtract with and without rounding.  Rounding is used to find values that are close to a correct answer.  Rounding is a useful skill to check if an answer is reasonable.  Your child will get a lot of practice doing "mental math" either by solving an addition problem or a rounded version without paper and pencil.  Some of the new vocabulary terms you may hear your child using are compensation, counting on, breaking apart, Commutative Property of Addition, Associative Property of Addition, Identity Property of Addition, and also inverse operations.

End of October News:

We have had a very busy month celebrating Homecoming Week, Red Ribbon Week and also by having our Fall Celebration, AR Reward, and the end of the month PBIS Reward! Wow!  We have also been working hard in math class by continuing to practice our multiplication facts and finishing Topic 2-Generating and Analyzing Patterns.  This past week we have started Topic 1-Multiplication and Division-Meanings and Facts. Your child will be reviewing multiplication and division and exploring the ways they are related. This relationship can be shown with fact families, such as these:
                                         4x7=28                        7x4=28
                                         28÷7=4                        28÷4=7
A fact family is made up of multiplication and division facts that include all of the same numbers.

Please check your child's assignment book nightly for any homework they may have.  It is also important to consistently practice basic multiplication facts in order to increase speed and accuracy. We have been using a website in class that offers a lot of fun games to practice facts: www.multiplication.com

Looking ahead....

There will be a PTO meeting on November 6th at 6:30.  The first trimester ends on November 21st.  School will not be in session on November 23rd, 24th, or 27th .

  • Picture retakes will take place on October 12.

  • Math this week will focus on Topic 2: Generating and Analyzing Patterns.  Continue to practice those multiplication facts!! Build your "foundation".

We have really been working hard to learn and follow all of the SPARTY rules.  So far, we have practiced staying Safe and Participating.  This week we will concentrate on Acting Respectfully.  Some examples of acting respectfully are: use appropriate voice level, follow directions and classroom rules, listen when others are speaking, and use kind words and actions.

In Math we are finishing up Topic 3 on Place Value.  We will have a test on Topic 3 towards the end of the week.  Keep practicing your facts so you can recite them fluently.  Please check your assignment book for daily homework assignments.  Our fact test will be on Friday on the 4's.

Please continue to send any papers from the PTO or office back to school in your child's red "Spartan" folder. This includes t-shirt orders, fundraisers, or any other type of letter from the administration or homeroom teacher. All other subject specific papers should stay in that subject's assigned folder. Reading-Red, Math-Blue, Science-Green, Social Studies-Orange.
